Shape Language and Colour Theory
I started this art by putting multiple shapes together to form the body of the character. I used a round head with a triangle base as I wanted the character to seem warm and welcoming through the circular head, but also strong and wise with the triangle aspect.
I also mostly used squares and rectangles for the majority of the body as squares are a solid reliable shape that makes a character look strong
At the base of the square torso, I put a triangle base there to add to the sense of strength and to also make the character more interesting. I turned this shape into a lab coat in the final drawing
Once I got the shapes for the outline down, I started the sketch of the actual character. I made the torso a lab coat with a t-shirt that has an atom on to fit with the character being a scientist. For the bottom, I gave the character jeans with a belt to fit with the t-shirt.
as for the face of the character, I wanted him to look smart like a science teacher, and so I gave him some glasses and a beard. I also made him bald with some hair left to look wise and intelligent.
I also Posed him like that so that if the character was fully black like a silhouette then you could still understand what was going on in the pose, as it is clear that he is walking, and he has one hand in his pocket and the other pointed outwards like a finger gun.
As for the colour theory aspect, I wanted to keep the labcoat an off-white colour to sleep it looking like a lab coat. Then I experimented with different colours for the t-shirt, jeans and belt to find a combination that works best for the character. The final design I picked was the 3rd design because I like that it’s bright to represent a more welcoming and approachable personality, but also the grey t-shirt also has a contrast with the labcoat to make them stand out. The brown belt also stands out a bit more compared to the other colour palettes which I like.
Overall I think as a first try for shape language and colour theory, It worked out quite well. The method I used of experimenting with the colours of the drawing helped me pick a colour scheme I really liked and will be useful for other drawings I do. Planning the character out with shapes initially is also useful as it gave a clearer idea of what i wanted to go for in my head.
